Reusable medical devices can be divided into three categories according to the degree of risk of infection based on the use of the device:

• Critical devices, such as surgical forceps, come in contact with blood or normally sterile tissue.
• Semi-critical devices, such as endoscopes, come in contact with mucus membranes.
• Non-critical devices, such as stethoscopes, come in contact with unbroken skin.

The recommended bacteria strain according to ASTM E1837 :

Staphylococcus aureus
Serratia marcescens
Escherichia coli
Mycobacterium bovis /Mycobacterium terrae
Pseudomonas aeruginosa

There is no specific passing criteria in this Simulated Use Test method. This test method allows customers to measure the  efficacy of disinfection process of reusable medical devices.
