Determination of Antimicrobial Activity of Surface Disinfection by Steam (With or Without Contact) based on AFNOR NF T72-110
NF T72-110 is an AFNOR standard used to evaluate steam disinfection devices used on non-porous surfaces. This method is suitable to determine all antimicrobial activities including bactericidal, yeasticidal, fungicidal, sporicidal and virucidal activity in all areas. The infographic below shows a brief insight of our in-house test method for steam disinfection based on NF T72-110.
CUSTOMER PROCESS
Step 1: Is your technology used for disinfection via steam?
This method is dedicated to determine the antimicrobial activity of steam disinfection devices. Steam disinfection device is generally operated by releasing water vapour at high temperatures allowing the destruction of microorganisms.
Step 2: Select your preferred antimicrobial activity
Pick the targeted area of application:
- Medical area
- Veterinary area
- Food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas
Choose your preferred antimicrobial activity spectrum:
- Bactericidal
- Yeasticidal
- Fungicidal
- Virucidal
- Tuberculocidal
- Mycobactericidal
- Sporicidal
- Phagocidal

Step 3: Select an appropriate passing speed, number of passes and distance for your test product
Passing speed and number of passes dictates exposure of the surface to the disinfection process by how fast the device is moved from A to B and how many times the device is passed between A and B. The minimum and obligatory passing speed given by the test method is 10 cm/s.
Distance corresponds to how far is the device to the test surface. There are 2 uses of the steam disinfection device according to manufacturer’s instruction, with contact and without contact. In the case of “with contact”, distance shall be < 5 mm and the mechanical effect is considered in the evaluation. In the case of “without contact” disinfection, the minimum distance given by the test method is 5 mm.
Step 4: What are the soiling conditions associated with your test product?
Interfering substances, or commonly referred to as soiling, are used to mimic organic substances found on human skin, surfaces, and instruments. These are the available soiling conditions according to the target area:
Medical Area:
- Dirty condition: 3.0 g/L bovine serum albumin + 3.0 mL/L erythrocytes
- Dirty condition for sensitive microorganisms: 3.0 g/L bovine serum albumin + 3.0 mL/L erythrocytes + reconstituted skimmed milk 1/5
Veterinary Area:
- High level dirty condition: 10 g/L bovine serum albumin + 10 g/L yeast extract
- High level dirty condition for sensitive microorganisms: 10 g/L bovine serum albumin + 10 g/L yeast extract + reconstituted skimmed milk 1/5
Food, Industrial, Domestic and Institutional Areas:
- Dirty condition: 3.0 g/L bovine serum albumin
- Dirty condition for sensitive microorganisms: 3.0 g/L bovine serum albumin + reconstituted skimmed milk 1/5
Step 5: Place an order and send your sample to us
Fill the test request form and place an order via email at info@tecolab-global.com.
You can deliver the steam disinfection device to us via courier and provide us the tracking code. We will monitor the delivery status and inform you when we receive the sample.
Step 6: Track the status of your request
Once we have received your sample, we will provide a tracking number to you. You can easily track the status of your request here.
Step 7: Download your password-protected test report
Download your readily available test report online with just a single click using the link and password provided via email notification. We will receive a notification once you have downloaded the test report.
For safety purposes, the uploaded test report will self-destruct after 7 days.
Step 8: Analyze your passing criteria in the test report with our laboratory experts
In order to pass the test, the product shall demonstrate these log reductions in the medical area, veterinary area and food, industrial, domestic and institutional area:
- 5 decimal log (lg) reduction for bactericidal activity
- 4 decimal log (lg) reduction for yeasticidal and/or fungicidal activity
- 4 decimal log (lg) reduction for virucidal activity
- 3 decimal log (lg) reduction for sporicidal activity
- 4 decimal log (lg) reduction for phagocidal activity
- 4 decimal log (lg) reduction for mycobactericidal activity
