Skin irritation testing is performed using the EpiDerm model, which utilizes Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RhE). This method follows OECD 439, an internationally recognized guideline for assessing the skin irritation potential of biocides, chemicals, and cosmetics—without the need for animal testing.
The diagram below provides a summary of the test method according to OECD 439.

TESTING CRITERIA AND CUSTOMER PROCESS
Step 1: Is your product a chemical?

OECD 439 is specifically designed for the hazard identification of irritant chemicals, biocides, and cosmetics. If your product is a medical device, please refer to ISO 10993-23 for skin irritation testing.

Step 2: What is the exposure time and condition?
  • The test substance is applied directly onto the Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RhE) for 60 minutes at 37°C.
  • After exposure, the tissue is rinsed and incubated for 42 hours under standard cell culture conditions.
Step 3: What is the passing criteria?
  • If cell viability after 42 hours of post-exposure is ≤ 50%, the tested product is classified as Irritant.
  • If cell viability after 42 hours of post-exposure is > 50%, the tested product is classified as Non-Irritant.
Step 4: Place an order and send your sample to us
