Skin corrosion refers to irreversible tissue damage in the skin. This testing is performed using the EpiDerm model, which utilizes Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RhE) according to OECD 431, an internationally recognized guideline for assessing the skin corrosion potential and classification of biocides, chemicals, and cosmetics—without the need for animal testing.
The diagram below provides a summary of the test method according to OECD 431.

TESTING CRITERIA AND CUSTOMER PROCESS
Step 1: Is your product a chemical?

OECD 431 is specifically designed for the hazard identification of chemicals, biocides, and cosmetics that may cause skin corrosion.

Step 2: What is the exposure time and condition?

The test substance is applied directly onto the Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RhE) for the duration of 2 fixed exposure times:

  • 3 minutes
  • 60 minutes

After exposure, the tissue is rinsed and incubated before assessing cell viability via MTT assay.

Step 3: What is the passing criteria?

If cell viability after 3 minutes of exposure is <50%, the tested product is classified as Corrosive.

  • If cell viability is <25%, it is categorized as sub-category 1A
  • If cell viability is ≥25%, it is categorized as a combination of sub-category 1B and 1C

If cell viability is 50% after 3 minutes and <15% after 60 minutes, the tested product is classified as Corrosive.

If cell viability is ≥50% after 3 minutes and ≥15% after 60 minutes, the tested product is classified as Non-Corrosive.

Step 4: What is next if the product is non-corrosive?

If the tested product is classified as non-corrosive, skin irritation test must be performed additionally, to determine if the product has potential to cause skin irritation.

Step 5: Place an order and send your sample to us

Fill in the test request form and place an order via email at info@tecolab-global.com. We will advise on the quantity of sample required for testing.

You can deliver the sample to us via courier and provide us the tracking code. We will monitor the delivery status and inform you when we receive the sample.

Step 6: Track the status of your request

Once we have received your sample, we will provide a tracking number to you. You can easily track the status of your request here.

Step 7: Download your password-protected test report

Download your readily available test report online with just a single click using the link and password provided via email notification. We will receive a notification once you have downloaded the test report.

For safety purposes, the uploaded test report will self-destruct after 7 days.
