EN 17430 is the European Standard used to simulate practical conditions for establishing whether a hygienic handrub reduces the release of virus contamination on hands. The infographic below shows a brief insight of EN 17430.

This brand-new standard published in 2024 is a big step forward in the field of disinfectant efficacy testing. So far, hand hygiene products have been evaluated in-vitro via the EN 14476 test method where activity of the product against viruses are evaluated in a suspension which may not reflect real-life application. Now, we are able to test whether handrub products are effective against viruses on the surface of the hands. Manufacturers of hygienic handrub products with virucidal claims may now find it vital to have your products tested against this standard.

In this test method, Murine norovirus is chosen to artificially contaminate the hands of volunteers as this strain generally only infects mice and meets the health and safety considerations for volunteer testing.  According to EN 14885, with the release of a new standard, manufacturers are to test their products in accordance with this new standard within 18 months of the publication of the standard. Therefore, learn more about this method with TECOLAB below.

Virucidal activity hand test is only suitable for hygienic handrub.

For other hand products, there is no virucidal hand test available. EN 14476 may be performed for virucidal activity claims. Alternatively, for bactericidal activity, please refer to EN 1500 (for hygienic handrub), EN 1499 (for hygienic handwash) or EN 12791 (for surgical handrub or handwash).

Step 2: What is the test organism and number of volunteers required?

The test microorganism for EN 17430 is Murine norovirus.

The number of volunteers required is 18 to 22.

Step 3: Select an appropriate contact time and application procedure for your test product

The contact time is according to the manufacturer’s recommendation, but not shorter than 30 seconds and not longer than 60 seconds.
